the infinite rustles among the branches of the trees and the roots.

The root collar is the transition area in which the roots and the stem differentiate and meet, the hidden and the visible part of the tree. Even starting from this simple definition, it is possible to understand the symbolic significance of the tree. It is not only the space and the material in which very different elements and phenomena meet and communicate.

It is the very concrete symbol of the coincidentia oppositorum in which the extremes and more distant concepts. Therefore in a sort of perfect continuity we find not only the earth and the air, the dark and the light, winter and spring. In continuity they are alsothe depth and the height, the micro and the macrocosm, the part and the whole, the one and the multiple, the finite and the infinite. And the past and the future, being and not being, the straight line and the curve […]

The power of the archetype represented by the tree consists in its ability to plastically represent not only the relationship of interdependence and mutual conditionality of opposites, but precisely the idea that everything is united and communicates with everything.

The bright green of the highest leaf shines thanks to that seed that freed its roots and pushed them deeper and deeper to seek nourishment for exactly that flower that fell becoming seed. That monument to complexity that is the tree reminds us that the profound reasons for things, their truths, often lie right where they cannot be seen. The growth of the tree depends on the rain and the sun on its leaves, but it is its roots, their prodigious intelligence, that organize that growth. Also for this reason, at times, I seem to hear

a chirping / over there / among the roots.
